ANCA History Initiative

Over the next few years, The Association of North Carolina Alphamen (ANCA) is embarking on a journey to document its history through the writing and publication of a book-length history. This book is tentatively titled First in Service: The History of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in North Carolina.

First in Service will be an exemplary narrative of the history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in the state of North Carolina.  The history of the fraternity’s connections to our state begin with the initiation of Lemuel Graves into Alpha Chapter at Cornell University and continues through the establishment of Alpha Omicron Chapter at Johnson C. Smith University.  Over the course of ten decades, the First in Service will share a narrative of racial uplift among rural African American men striving for better opportunities for themselves and their families.  Preliminary research suggests that Alpha Phi Alpha provided a blueprint for their social stratification through service and through social opportunity.

Every Brother in ANCA, past and present, is welcome to contribute to this history!  Please contact ANCA Historian, Brother Rashid Darden [email protected], to learn how you can join the efforts.
